The Mildred G. Arnold Story

Mildred G. Arnold (1911-1990) was a teacher, writer, researcher and humanitarian. Educated at Cornell University, she held a variety of challenging positions including a post with the U.S. Public Health Service; an assignment to the War Production Board during World War II; associate editor of the Ladies Home Journal; and home economics director for the Rome Division of Revere Copper and Brass. She taught at Colorado State University in the College of Home Economics from 1966 to 1976. She co-authored nine editions of the textbook, Household Equipment and Supplies, as well as its international edition.

Although Mildred retired in 1976, she continued to serve the community. She traveled extensively, became an RSVP tax service volunteer, served on a variety of boards and committees and became an advocate for retired people of Larimer County. Several years prior to her death, Mildred directed part of her estate to be used to support two causes dear to her heart: the issues and needs of aging and the elderly as well as issues regarding women in Larimer County. Mildred identified three women with diverse backgrounds and experiences to serve as trustees of the foundation. Judy McKenna, Renie O'Rourke and Joellen Thorton were charged with implementing Mildred's generous gift. The resulting foundation has supported many non profit agencies, educational programs for women and girls.
